About

Honour - Loyalty - Revenge

Billy Bowman has just become a citizen of the British Empire, stepping up to meet his new obligations of service, honour, and allegiance to his King.

It’s also his first day of secondary school.

Like any 12-year-old, he needs to make new friends, to pass his exams and to learn how to fight for the Empire. An Empire that never stopped growing. An Empire whose colonies cover almost the entire world.

But the British Empire has powerful, secretive enemies, who only attack from the shadows to bring dissent into the Colonies.

Now, one of the most dangerous of those enemy agents has set his sights on Billy’s family, and he’ll stop at nothing to exact his revenge. Starting with Billy’s friends.

As friendships are tested and secrets are revealed, the price of loyalty must be paid.

Praise for this book

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!! you will love the bond between 3 students as they learn how to prepare to be active protectors of their homeland in this alternate world where the King of England is ruler of all but Russia, China, and Japan. Russia eventually wants in on it. Billy, Ian, and Jane are only 12 but everyone must learn how to serve their country and king and know "The History" inside and out, spoiler America did not win its Independence. ouch. But that is the boring part, and even the boring story bits are exciting. The relationships of Billy at home, at school, how he handles himself internally are amazing. Th fun? Steam ships, air-planes on a whole new level, steampunk robots greeting students at the door. The world just comes alive, and yes you will draw conclusions to Harry Potter and the author himself says he is fine with that parallel being drawn. THIS IS THE BOOK us grown up Potter Fans have been waiting for.

When I started reading it, I had memories arise of Biggles books that I had read as a child. A dashing noble adventure set in 1940’s Australia in an alternate universe where Britain ruled the world. The characters were very engaging and the voice perfectly matched that style.

Then the story would jar, subtly at first. This was not just a straight alternate history. Elements of technology and knowledge that did not match our world. I very much liked the gradual introduction of the steampunk elements into this very normal world.

Then more surprises. This will not remain a cosy sleepy rural village of no importance, rather international skullduggery is at play here.

A wonderfully engaging read, and I can not wait to read the next book in the series.
